Custom Bulk Bags (CBB) is a division of Custom Extrusion (Pty) Ltd and has been a leading manufacturer of flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBCs), also called bulk bags, in South Africa since its inception in 1999. CBB manufactures bulk bags for all industries, including mining, agriculture, chemicals and food, and has a wide range of bags to suit any bulk-handling application.

CBB not only convert woven polypropylene into bulk bags but also extrude and weave world-class polypropylene fabric. The bulk bags include a side loop, cross-corner loop, baffle, anti-sift and Type C anti-static bags, to name a few.

CBB is now capable of producing 3.5 million bulk bags per year, utilising its own materials, equipment and workforce. CBB supplies high-quality FIBCs to small, medium and large industries, with equal attention given to each market segment. CBB aims to be the benchmark provider of bulk packaging solutions for the South African and African markets.

Current capacities

Extrusion and weaving:

  • Total 450 tonnes per month or enough material for 300,000 bags per month.

Bulk bag conversion (Pinetown):

  • 250 000 bulk bags per month, running five days a week.

Bulk Bag conversion (Bloemfontein):

  • 50,000 bags per month, running five days per week.

Company Objectives

CBB has set out several objectives to which it will align and track its progress in the short-, medium- and long-term. Within these objectives, CBB have included some of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These set a positive vision for the future but need collective action to get there. They are in the interest of business, government and civil society to accelerate progress towards a better future for all.

CBB has identified five SDGs in which it can make the biggest impact and contribute the most, given the nature and current scale of the business. These are:

  • Goal 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Goal 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  • Goal 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production
  • Goal 13 – Climate Action

Outside of the SDGs, it’s short-term goals include:

  • Finishing its water recirculation plant
  • Expanding its solar investments
  • Improving its generator capacity
  • Improving its recycling processes

CBB’s medium- and long-term objectives are as follows:

  • To set up a bulk bag converting facility with the end goal of achieving ISO 22000 or the equivalent within two years.
  • To increase its extrusion and circular weaving capacity.
  • Revamp the 4th extruder to offer dual purposes.
  • To invest in additional webbing machines.
  • To invest R10 million in a new liner shaping project.
  • To invest in specialist factories – Single Point Lift (SPL) and Double Point Lift (DPL).
  • To engage in strategic acquisitions.
  • To develop international relationships with other world-class FIBC manufacturers.
